As temperatures drop and the snow starts to fall, it’s important to make sure your home or cottage is ready for the winter months. A few simple steps can prevent costly damage and make the cold season a lot more manageable.
1. Inspect and Service Your Septic System
Before the ground freezes, have your septic system inspected and pumped if needed. Cold weather can cause frozen lines and backups, especially if the system is already close to capacity. Make sure the tank lid is insulated and mark its location to avoid driving or plowing over it during the winter. If you have a holding tank, make sure it’s emptied before temperatures drop.
2. Plan for Snow Removal
Heavy snow can make driveways, roofs, and walkways unsafe. Have a snow removal plan in place early - because snow can happen any time! Ensure your driveway markers are in before the ground freezes, and clear any obstacles that could get buried under snow.
3. Check Your Roof and Gutters
Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams. Inspect your roof for loose shingles or flashing issues that could lead to leaks during thaw cycles.
5. Seal and Secure
Seal any gaps around windows and doors to keep heat in and critters out. Store outdoor furniture and equipment securely to protect them from wind and snow buildup.
